Creative Chaos: Week 1
Carlos at Ragamuffin Soul has challenged his readers to talk about what they’re doing with the creative process at their church. I moved to a different town last year, and started going to a Vineyard church where I knew some people. I have slowly but surely been working my way into the worship team where I play keyboards and (very occasionally) bass guitar. I haven’t “officially” begun yet, but I have been hanging out at rehearsals on Thursday nights. Sometimes playing an instrument if somebody is late, sometimes just sitting on the sidelines taking it all in. One benefit of that is to be able to listen, offer feedback, give some advice, maybe pick up an instrument and throw out some ideas when needed. I’ve been filling this role for the last few weeks, and I routinely get asked things like, “How does this voicing sound?” “How’s our balance?” “What’s this bridge need to get us back to the chorus?” Things like that. It’s kind of cool to be in that position while I’m working my way into playing on Sundays on a regular basis.
So that’s it, that’s my first installment of Creative Chaos. Perhaps you worship team members/leaders in bigger churches have somebody (or several somebodies) who also do something like this on a regular basis. It’s a new concept to me, and something I plan to continue even on the weeks that I’m not scheduled to play. It definitely adds a new dimension to what they were already doing.
I’ll be doing a worship team/creativity segment on Thursday evenings to coincide with Los’ Creative Chaos challenge.
