Floating Thoughts: First week of school edition

August 29, 2008 By: Rick Category: Floating thoughts

It’s amazing how the beginning of school changes my energy level and shifts my focus from “next year” to “right now.” As soon as kids hit the door, we’re running! Fortunately in a positive way. We’ve had a great first week of school so far. Some thoughts as I begin the year:

  • I’m still working out how to deliver the 40 Developmental Assets to our kids, but we picked up a lot of materials last year and I’m excited about what we can do with them. Look for a few school assemblies and plenty of classroom lessons to show us how we can live and grow and learn together.
  • This is about the smoothest first week of school I’ve ever seen. It’s probably no coincidence that this is probably the most solid staff I’ve ever worked with, top to bottom, veterans to new teachers.
  • Last year, I was a half-credit shy of moving over on the pay scale. I made sure that classes I have taken since then are on file at the district office. My current salary is now $40k more than my first contract when I started out in this business 19 years ago (not adjusting for inflation).
  • I used a Promethean board in a classroom setting with kids the other day for the very first time. All I can say is that it’s unreal. Teaching and learning will never be the same again. I can’t wait until one of those things are in every single room in our building.
  • Speaking of technology, one of my goals is to take a more active role in it’s implementation in our building (maybe our district) this year. Specifically, I’d like to demonstrate how to use the tools we already have to more efficiently do the job we’re trying to do. We have far too many really good educators who are dragging their feet in technology. Does this happen in other sectors as well?
  • Also, speaking of technology, I get my Ed Tech inspiration and ideas from this guy, this guy, and this guy. There are a few others, also. Interesting that, more and more, those ideas are coming via Twitter and not individual blogs.
  • My football recess kids from last year say they like Miss Thoelke as a quarterback better than me. Apparently, she throws better than I do.

Three day weekend coming up. Hitting Tri-Cities tonight, spending some time with my parents tomorrow at my niece’s shower, then having some friends over for dinner on Sunday. I’m going to spend Monday getting ready for next week. Have a great weekend everybody!

Floating Thoughts: Late summer edition

August 18, 2008 By: Rick Category: Floating thoughts

It’s been a while since I’ve posted any Floating Thoughts, so I thought I’d take this part of my last day of summer to do just that. Here goes:

  • I’m really liking ScribeFire over Windows Live Writer right now. When you think about it, the most logical place to blog from is right within your web browser. ScribeFire has really come a long ways the last couple of years. Plus, it can put out a new post notification on Facebook.
  • Went to the funeral of a coworker today. She was 39, and died a week shy of her 40th birthday. We start school again in a few days, so we’re going to be revisiting that issue when we come back.
  • I’m playing in a new band these days. Just some old guys with instruments getting together to jam, but man is it fun.
  • We’re starting our Professional Learning Communities (PLC’s) at school this year. We just had a district leadership team meeting this morning to kick all of that off. I’m excited, and I plan on blogging about it in the future. I love that we’re focused on student learning and are working to collaborate on how to make sure every one of these little buggers learn. Student success is school success.
  • I am really digging that new Third Day album these days. I think I’ve just about burned a hole through it already.
  • Getting a new puppy is rarely the dad’s idea.
  • I am so pumped about the upcoming college football season. Ten days, two hours, thirty minutes, and 28 seconds until da Beavs open against Stanford. 26, 25, 24, 23…
  • Add me on Facebook. You know you want to. Just posted a new pic of Susan and me at Multnomah Falls this last July.

Worship Confessional: 8/17/2008

August 17, 2008 By: Rick Category: Worship Confessional

I hadn’t anticipated playing again this week, but a last-minute change had me playing keyboards one more time. Consider this a bonus worship confessional.

I had rehearsed with another band earlier this week, so my Korg N1 was already at church. I just left it plugged in and went ahead and used it this morning for worship. Glad I did, too; I like the sound on it better than the one the church normally uses. It’s an older board–I’ve had it for about nine years–but it gets the job done and I don’t have to go searching for the sounds I need. I was told afterward that the sound sat better in the mix than our other keyboard also.

Here is the set for today:

  • Hosanna (Paul Baloche)
  • Change Me On The Inside (Brian Doerksen)
  • Grace Like Rain (Agnew & Collins) Our reggae version again, but this time I used a cool organ patch called “Organomics” and worked to get a tasteful treatment of the rotary effect.
  • Fall On Us Now (Dave Chumchal)
  • At All Times (Vicky Beeching)

Nothing new here, but we had a great worship service. It was good to have an extra week of this. I’ll probably be off for the next few weeks, but look forward to playing again when it’s my time. School is starting up in full swing this week, so I’m sure my next several posts will be related to that. Have a great week everybody!

How’d your worship go this weekend?

Back-to-school list

August 14, 2008 By: Rick Category: Evernote, School activities, School leadership, Technology

Man, it’s hard to believe, but the start of school is staring at us in the face. My list of to-do’s stays relatively constant, but for some reason I have more this year than others. We have a major schedule change, which means we’ve had to rethink how we do the start to the day, lunch times, and ending of the day. We’ve had to put together a plan that will accommodate the new times but be flexible enough to change when problems arise. This is still in progress.

In addition to the new schedule, I have a few other items on my list for the rest of this week and next:

  • Put together an in-service presentation for teachers. We’ll cover retention procedures with student interventions, playground rules/tracking procedures, and how we’re going to implement 40 Assets into our classrooms.
  • Finish up some materials for my admin program and send in my certification materials.
  • Get the rest of my office unpacked and ready to go for the school year.
  • Figure out Outlook 2007, a big change from Groupwise that we’ve been using for the past several years. I like it, but I need to learn more about it to make it fit in with my way of being organized.
  • How will Evernote fit in with all of this? My goal is 50% paperless this year.
  • Sit down and discuss all of these (and more!) with the principal.

I’m always excited to start the school year. It’s the most important time of the school year, in my opinion, because how you start sets the tone for the next 36 weeks.

How’s the start of your year going?

Worship Confessional: 8/10/2008

August 10, 2008 By: Rick Category: Worship Confessional

This is my third Worship Confessional in a row, with nothing in-between, so that shows about how much blogging I’ve been able to get done these last few weeks of summer. Different line-up today, although Dave stayed on guitar. Our set:

  • The Only One (Nigel Briggs)
  • You Do All Things Well (Tomlin, Reeves, & Clement)
  • Desire (Jessica Ketola)
  • Above All Else (Vicky Beeching)
  • Worthy, You Are Worthy (Matt Redman & Chris Tomlin)
  • At All Times (Vicky Beeching)
  • As Children (Jeremy Riddle)

I wasn’t at rehearsal this week, and a few others were gone as well, but this set went off nicely. Our musicians:

  • Rebecca LaFollette, guitar & lead
  • Dave Floria, electric guitar
  • Jeff Searles, bass
  • Eilene Searles, djembe/backup vocals
  • Brad Reynolds, drums
  • Me, piano/keys

I’m not on the schedule to play the rest of the month, but you never know. Things change. Have a great week, everybody.

How was your worship time this week?

Worship Confessional: 8/3/2008

August 03, 2008 By: Rick Category: Worship Confessional

Great time of worship this morning. We had the same crew on stage that we did last week, so it was nice to have one more Sunday together. Here’s our set:

  • I Will Worship (David Ruis)–Dave had a really cool riff going on with this one, and it was a lot different than I’d ever played it before. Good stuff.
  • Grace Like Rain (Todd Agnew & Chris Collins)–Reggae style on the verses.
  • We Are Hungry (Brad Kilman)
  • With All Of My Heart (Dave Fife)
  • Jesus, All For Jesus (Robin Mark)–Kind of a Celtic treatment on this one.
  • Your Name (Paul Baloche & Glenn Packiam)

How was your worship weekend?

Included at Fred McKinnon’s Sunday Setlists #2.
