You Ask, I’ll Answer

January 16, 2008 By: Rick Category: Uncategorized 4 Comments →

Since consolidating my two blogs into this one, I have no idea where my readership is these days.  I’m still trying to figure out what this blog is all about, so perhaps I’m setting myself up for something.  That said, I’m intrigued by a couple of posts by Los and by Crystal, and thought I’d give it a shot.  Here’s how it works:  You ask me anything in the comment section, and I’ll answer.  Anything.  Polls close 24 hours from now, or 9:00pm PST on Thursday.  We’ll see what happens.  This should be fun.

Oh, and this isn’t really a meme, but if you decide to pick this up and run with it, let me know.

40 Developmental Assets

January 16, 2008 By: Rick Category: 40 Developmental Assets, School activities, Teaching No Comments →

Our school district has invested in training for 40 Developmental Assets from Search Institute.  These answer the question, “What do our kids have in their lives that help them grow to be healthy?”  Rather than just being a new program that we have to squeeze in between 2nd Step and recess, this is just a way of looking at what we do  at school to help kids grow to their potential.  External assets are the things that kids have around them.  Internal assets are based inside the students themselves.  Some of the external assets we directly have here at school, others are based in the home and the community.  External assets are:

  • Support
  • Empowerment
  • Boundaries and Expectations
  • Constructive Use of time

Internal boundaries include:

  • Commitment to Learning
  • Positive Values
  • Social Competencies
  • Positive Identity

Each of the 40 Developmental Assets falls under one of those categories.  At Sunset Elementary, one activity we are focusing on is catching kids doing the right thing, which falls under the heading of “Caring school climate” in Support.

What are you doing at your school or in your personal life to promote kids growing up healthy?

New Year, new directions

January 03, 2008 By: Rick Category: Blogworthy No Comments →

First of all, welcome readers from Another Storm!  I am discontinuing that blog, and will be posting everything here from now on.  This started out as my professional blog a year or so ago, but I will be adding personal information as well.  I’m also in the process of updating my blogroll, and I will be migrating those from my other blog as well.

I will continue to use this blog for professional purposes, but I will also include some of the more mundane and/or personal posts on here.  Specifically, I will include posts about my (continuing) weight loss, boys, and upcoming marriage.  Yes, in case you hadn’t heard, Susan and I got engaged over Christmas break and we will soon make that a permanent situation.  I honestly don’t have any more details than that at this point.

So in many ways, this blog will expand to the intersection of my:

  • Career (education, counseling, and administration)
  • Family (big plans coming up!)
  • Musical interests (both listening and performing)
  • Christian faith (with some decidedly unorthodox beliefs)

And whatever else I find blogworthy.  Enjoy the ride–I look forward to seeing where this thing takes us.  Feel free to stop by and say hey any time.
