Grammar Girl
‘Grammar Girl’ a quick and dirty success - CNN.com
I haven’t put this one on my iPod yet, but apparently Grammar Girl is quite a hit on iTunes, at one point claiming the #2 spot in popularity on the podcast subscription site. Recent articles on her blog include the use of “bad” vs. “badly”, and how to appropriately correct somebody’s grammar.
This is the brainchild of Mignon Fogarty, a technical writer from Arizona who says she got her idea in a coffee shop one day last Spring. She put the podcast together in July, and the rest is history. She’s been so successful, in fact, that she has put out similar podcasts for manners, money management, and Second Life survival.
You can find the iTunes subscription link here. I’m going there right now to check it out.
Anybody making use of Grammar Girl in the classroom?

Two cool things from this post:
1. The link to Grammar Girl (which lead me to subscribe to 60-Second Science, The Mo Rocca Show on Discovery Channel, and This American Life, as well as grab a copy of the audio for Allegory of the Cave from The Philosophy Podcast and find The Princeton Review Vocab Minute)
2. The idea that links to specific pages within iTunes is possible:

Why didn’t I know about that before now?
I can see making Grammar Girl a resource for students to listen to. Create a page full of questions that students commonly have and refer the answers to Grammar Girl (using the handy link above). To use the podcasts in the classroom, overheads of the sample sentences would be needed, which isn’t a problem but something to consider. I might use “100 Proof” and “Wrestling With That First Sentence” at some point with my juniors. The one about interviewing will also come in handy for my seniors. It has promise, if nothing else than to be an audio confirmation of what’s in handbooks and what I harp about in the classroom.
Do you see any possibilities for how it can be put to use?
